Danilo Blaiotta

Achille Succi & Danilo Blaiotta “CRABS” is a project formed in 2015, after years of collaboration between them in the Balkanica Quintet. The project began as the desire for both artists to create completely unedited music with unexplored sounds and unconventional timbres.

This timbric bond between instruments is very particular in each of its combinations. The bass clarinet and piano blend together in a uniquely descriptive mix, with echoes of ancient, oriental music and, in general, the popular eastern traditions. The mixture of middle-bass frequencies of the two instruments is magical, and offers some rather suggestive sonorities. With the alto sax, on the other hand, we rediscover the traditional jazz sounds. All of which become a play on colors, impressions, in a veritable painter’s easel of exploration as it transmits to the audience in an ever changing manner.

The music, written exclusively by these two musicians, is a blend of harmonic and melodic intensity that gravitate towards a new idea of jazz… From the classical form of the score in the bass clef to the free jazz obstinate on one chord. The rhythmic structure and the collaboration of the accents between the two is fundamental in creating a true and properly continuous dance, irregularly regular in the impact on the listener. The melodies are eastern inspired, which, for both musicians, is fundamental to their artistic growth. The East is a fountain of inspiration for both Blaiotta (who has Arbereshe origins and is the founder of the already-mentioned Balkanica Quintet) and Succi (who was a member of the Kocani Orchestra and collaborates with diverse composers and Greek musicians).

Their first record, “Crabs”, was released for the label WOW Records in June 2019.

Achille Succi & Danilo Blaiotta “CRABS” è un progetto nato nel 2015, dopo anni di collaborazione dei due musicisti nel quintetto Balkanica. Il progetto nasce dalla volontà dei due artisti di creare musica completamente inedita con sonorità inesplorate e timbriche poco convenzionali.

Il legame timbrico tra gli strumenti è particolare in tutte le combinazioni. Il clarinetto basso e il pianoforte si fondono in un’ unica miscela descrittiva, che ricorda echi di antiche musiche orientali e in generale della tradizione popolare dell’est. L'impasto tra medio bassi dei due strumenti è magico, e tocca frequenze sonore molto suggestive. Con il sax alto invece si riscoprono i suoni della tradizione jazzistica. Il tutto diventa un gioco di colori, impressioni, in una vera e propria tavolozza pittorica da esplorare e trasmettere al pubblico in maniera sempre variegata.

Le musiche, scritte dai due musicisti esclusivamente per questo progetto, sono un misto di intensità armoniche e melodiche che vanno verso una nuova idea di jazz... Dalla scrittura della chiave di basso in forma classica al free jazz ostinato su un accordo. L'impianto ritmico e la collaborazione di accenti tra i due è fondamentale per creare una vera e propria danza continua, irregolarmente regolare nell'impatto sull'ascoltatore. Le melodie hanno un'ispirazione a est, che per i due i musicisti è fondamentale nella propria crescita artistica. L'oriente è terra di ispirazione tanto per Blaiotta (che ha origini arbereshe ed è fondatore del già citato quintetto Balkanica) quanto per Succi (che è stato membro della Kocani orchestar e collabora con diversi compositori e musicisti greci).

Il loro primo disco, "Crabs", è in uscita per l'etichetta WOW Records il 21 giugno 2019.
